In the world of global health financing, the Netherlands has provided strategic support for the International Finance Facility for Immunisation (IFFIm) and is a perfect example of how smart, focused investments can deliver powerful results.
Over the years, the Netherlands has made an outsized impact on global health—leveraging smart, targeted investments to deliver vaccines to millions of children around the world. As a dedicated partner of IFFIm, the Dutch government has used innovative finance as a powerful tool to promote global equity.
The Netherlands joined IFFIm in 2009 as its fifth sovereign donor, committing €80 million over eight years. Since then, its total contributions to IFFIm have reached the equivalent of US$ 487 million over 22 years, helping unlock urgently needed funds for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
At the 2020 Global Vaccine Summit, the Netherlands deepened its commitment by announcing a €325 million contribution to Gavi. Of this, €250 million was channeled through IFFIm to be disbursed over 10 years, maximising impact through frontloading. The package also included €50 million in direct support and €25 million toward Gavi’s extended Matching Fund. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Netherlands stepped up again, committing €70 million to the COVAX Advance Market Commitment (AMC) to help ensure equitable vaccine access in lower-income countries.
Efficiency, accountability, and global impact
The Netherlands’ approach to international development has always prioritised efficiency, transparency, and value for money. These principles are embedded in IFFIm’s model, which turns long-term pledges into immediate resources through Vaccine Bonds, allowing Gavi to respond faster and at scale.
Today, the Netherlands continues to show how innovative finance can turn strategic public funding into life-saving impact. With IFFIm, the Dutch government is not just investing in vaccines; it's investing in global stability, health equity, and a safer world for future generations.
