Gavi Annual Progress Report: 2021 was “defining” for IFFIm

21 October 2022

From its founding in 2000 to the end of 2021, Gavi has helped to immunise a whole generation – over 981 million children – and prevented more than 16.2 million future deaths, helping to halve child mortality in 73 lower-income countries by the end of 2021. These are a few of the results published in Gavi’s 2021 Annual Progress Report.

These are a few of the results published in Gavi’s 2021 Annual Progress Report.1

The year 2021 was also defining for IFFIm, said the report, as it “played a more significant role supporting both Gavi’s core immunisation programmes and COVAX.” In 2021, Australia, Spain and Sweden pledged significant new funds for COVAX through IFFIm. In total, IFFIm has raised US$ 975 million for COVAX. Also in 2021, IFFIm made the largest ever single-year disbursement in its 15-year history of US$ 1.2 billion to Gavi, while raising US$ 1 billion in its largest bond issue since its inaugural transaction in 2006.2

Highlighting key data, partnerships and milestones, the 2021 Annual Progress Report offers insights into Gavi’s progress last year, while facing the challenges ahead – including the Vaccine Alliance’s role in the global COVID-19 response.

The report documents the effects of the pandemic, which slowed routine immunisation progress and caused a drop in overall immunisation coverage across 57 Gavi-supported countries in 2021, although preliminary data from the first five months of 2022 indicate that country health systems may be recovering from the strains of COVID-19.

Against this backdrop, Gavi-supported countries made significant strides.  Between 2000 and 2021, Gavi’s achievements included:

  • >981 million children vaccinated through routine programmes
  • >1.4 billion vaccinations through vaccination campaigns
  • >16.2 million future deaths prevented
  • 5611 vaccine introductions and campaigns
  • >US$ 185.3 billion in economic benefits generated in the countries we support
  • US$ 1.3 billion in co-financing contributions from Gavi-supported countries since 2018
